During spring: as the warmth returns and the bees start to buzz in the wildflower meadows, Provence comes to life. Although temperatures can still be a little on the chilly side, especially in the mountains, the south is already climbing into the low 20s C° (around 65°F). The chances of any showers are diminishing, and spectacular attractions such as the Roman amphitheatre of Orange are still quiet and tranquil.
During summer: July is the hottest month of the year in Provence when the temperature can regularly climb to well over 30°C (86°F). This is the time to find a secluded beach and cool down in the warm Mediterranean Sea or browse artwork in some of the region’s finest galleries. Summer is festival time too, with every village and town celebrating Bastille Day on July 14th with fireworks and street parties. If you want to catch that quintessential picture of the lavender fields in full bloom or the fields of golden sunflowers, July or August is the best time.
During autumn: as the summer holidays come to an end, Provence enters its golden phase. Autumn in the region is utterly mesmerising, with the forests ablaze with autumn colours. The beaches are quieter but the Mediterranean waters are still warm enough for swimming and daytime temperatures in the French Riviera towns, such as Cannes and Saint-Tropez, can still climb to around 25°C (77°F). Any showers are short and quickly followed by more sunshine. The roads are quieter too, so hire a car and explore natural wonders such as the Gorges de Verdon, or the Pont du Gard.
During winter: the south of Provence along the Côte d'Azur offers a wonderful winter sun escape. To the north, you’ll enjoy exceptional skiing in the winter conditions, as well as the delights of Christmas markets and festivities. The climate can vary from one location to the next, and while the south is generally in the mid-teens to low 20s°C (66-77°F), the Mistral winds can send the thermometer tumbling so pack a jumper or two for the cooler evenings.
Make the journey as memorable as the arrival. Your dedicated concierge can arrange transportation from the closest airport or train station to your Provence villa.
The Eurostar train service connects Lyon and Paris down to Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, and Valence. A TGV fast service from Paris will get you to the region in around three hours, depending on your destination. Your dedicated concierge can arrange tickets and bookings for you.
Provence is well served by multiple airports, including Nice, Cannes Mandelieu, Marseille Provence Airport, Toulon Hyères Airport, Monaco Heliport and La Mole Saint Tropez. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is the second-largest French international airport with incoming flights from Europe, the US, North Africa and the Middle East. Your dedicated concierge can help you work out which is the closest airport to your Provence villa, and arrange for car hire and hassle-free transfers on arrival.
Take a drive from your luxury Provence vacation rental or villa and you’ll discover that the roads of Provence are stunning, with broad highways between the major cities and fabulous country lanes to explore. Your dedicated concierge will be able to arrange car hire for you.
