BEST TIME TO GO
During spring: the weather is starting to warm up and the social calendar is packed with events that will give you a real insight into life in this part of the USA. To experience the flavours of the region, the Taste of Tuckahoe in April is a must, where local breweries, vineyards and restaurants put on a fabulous evening’s gourmet entertainment to raise funds for a local school. As the first blooms of spring arrive, it can still be chilly once the sun goes down, so pack a jumper for those evenings around the fire pit.
During summer: from June to August, the weather is warm and sunny, with temperatures well into the mid-20s°C (around 78-80°F), although it can climb higher than that. The water has warmed up and there is some world-class surfing to be had on beaches such as Mecox Beach in Bridgehampton and windsurfing in Napeague Bay.
During autumn: September and October see the temperatures start to drop and by November the evenings are once again cool enough to break out the jumpers. Towards the end of the month, you may experience the first snowfalls of winter. This is the perfect time to book a Hamptons vacation rental or villa so you can peacefully explore the art galleries and attractions in this part of New York state. Don’t forget the wonderful Halloween celebrations, where traditional activities include picking your own pumpkins and setting off on a spooky ghost walk through the Rogers Mansion in Southampton.
During winter: with crisp, dazzlingly bright days and star-filled nights, winter in The Hamptons is a wonderful experience. The temperatures have dropped considerably by now, so it’s time to wrap up warm and take a brisk walk along a deserted beach and watch the drama of the ocean. Venues such as the Parrish Art Museum are buzzing. Here, you’ll see exhibitions by local artists and see how their work is putting the spotlight on the environmental fragility of this part of the east coast. Meanwhile, vineyards offer wine tours throughout the season and a selection of restaurants remain open, serving up the finest lobster you’ll ever taste.
